About Oregon County, Missouri

Oregon County was formed on 14 February 1845 from Ripley County and was named for the Oregon Territory.  Oregon County is bordered on the south by Arkansas (Randolph, Sharp and Fulton Counties), on the north by Shannon County, on the east by Ripley County, and on the west by Howell County.  In 2000 the county population was 10,344 in a land area of 791 square miles.  The Oregon County Courthouse is located in Alton, Missouri.

About Alton, Missouri (nearby town)

Being the county seat of Oregon County, Alton is centrally located in the county and is easily accessible by many surrounding communities.  Alton is in the heart of the Ozark Mountains close to the state of Arkansas, at the junction of Scenic Highway 19 and Highway 160.  There are many recreational activities in the area and the surrounding scenery is enjoyed by tourists from all over the world.

The Eleven Point River flows in a southeasterly direction through the county and is popular for floating, fishing, camping, and other water activities. Greer Spring, north on Scenic Highway 19, is one of the United States most spectacular springs. Other springs, such as at Turner's Mill, are scattered throughout the county. Much of the surrounding forest land is part of the Mark Twain National Forest.

About Thayer, Missouri (nearby town)

Thayer is located on the Missouri-Arkansas state line on Highways 63 and 142 at the southern end of Highway 19, the only designated "scenic highway" in the state.

Located in the county with the most federal forest acreage in the state of Missouri, Thayer is a short drive from incredible floating and fishing at nearby Eleven Point River and Current River and is only 5 minutes from beautiful Spring River, which originates at neighboring Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.Grand Gulf State Park, known at "Little Grand Canyon," is located six miles northwest of Thayer on W Hwy. There you will find the spectacular ruins of a collapsed cave. Nearly three fourths of a mile of Grand Gulf's cavern roof fell, leaving a steep 130-foot-deep chasm. The roof remaining forms a natural bridge over a 250-foot tunnel. During wet weather, Bussell Creek flows through the Gulf and the natural tunnel into the cave.

Each year in April, Thayer celebrates Dogwood Daze with a day of fun-filled activities including crafts, golf and volleyball tournaments, plus many other activities.

The first weekend in November, Thayer hosts an arts and crafts festival which has over 200 exhibitors from several states selling crafts.
